2012 - The Future of History

The City of Salford Community Stadium is the future new home of Salford Rugby League Club. Salford City Council formed a joint venture company with Peel Holdings to develop and deliver the £16 million stadium, which will form part of the overall £26m development of the area currently being developed in Barton-upon-Irwell.

Initially the stadium will be built for a 12,000 crowd but it will be extended to accommodate up to 20,000 over time

It will have built-in offices, player facilities, hospitality boxes, concessions, community resources, two community outdoor sports pitches and will be available for business and public hire.

The stadium will have an area designated for standing supporters. It is designed with cover on all four sides and is expected to hold around 20,000 supporters. The Reds' current ground, The Willows, in the Weaste district of Salford, is a smaller ground with a capacity of around 11,000, with 2,500 seats.

Buckingham Group wins the Design and Build Contract for the City of Salford Community Stadium

Buckingham Group Contracting, with the support of design partners AFL, SKM and BWB has won the Design and Build Contract for the new £16m City of Salford Community Stadium, part of the overall £26m development.

In addition to providing a wide range of community facilities the new stadium will be the new home for the Salford City Reds. The stadium will be constructed to “Super League Standards”. The Community Stadium contract follows on from our successful, competitively secured, site remediation and preparation works contract at the Barton Stadium site. As the site remediation works are almost complete, work on the new 12,000 capacity Community Stadium will begin almost immediately for, Client; Salford City Council and Peel Holdings Joint Venture Company.

The whole project brings 45 acres of derelict land back into use for the community. This high profile development will provide a new sports stadium for the City which will bring considerable social and economic benefits to Salford. The new Community Sports Stadium supports Salford Reds’ Super League status and will be ready in time for the 2012 Super League Season.

The City of Salford Community Stadium Development embraces the following works:

• Construction of a 12,000 capacity stadium with 4 stands, designed for phased future expansion
• Main stand comprising concessions and community resources, player facilities, club match day facilities, banqueting and conferencing space, executive boxes, club offices, kitchen and pantry, and media and control rooms
• Two community outdoor pitches; one grass and one artificial
• Community changing facility
• Parking spaces (600 cars and circa 20 coaches)
• A new access route via Liverpool Road
